Establishing a new business is exciting and challenging. In fields such as film, animation, music, indie games design, graphic design, web development or app design it is also a good way to build a career. Around 40% of creative graduates freelance or establish their own businesses in the first three years after completing their course. Many people also set up creative businesses in midlife as running a creative business can provide the flexibility needed to accommodate other commitments. Southampton has one of the fastest growing tech, digital and creative economies in the UK. Between 2010 – 2016 around 500 new creative businesses were established in the city and the number of creative jobs grew by nearly 60%. It is estimated a further 1,500 people are working in the city’s creative sector on a freelance basis. However, working for yourself can be isolating and exhausting. Creative Growth Southampton is a new initiative designed to help people building businesses in the sector to develop the confidence skills and contacts needed to help them succeed.
The programme includes three elements:
- Free 1-1 face to face sector specific mentoring for people who have started a business which is ready to grow.
- Free training delivered at Southampton Solent University for new entrepreneurs and those considering setting up a business.
- Free networking events to grow the community of creative entrepreneurs, so they can learn from each how to grow their enterprises.
The initiative has been established through a partnership between Southampton City Council, Southampton Solent University, Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, Creative Network South and Culture Southampton.
Funding for the first year has been secured from the Partnership for Urban South Hampshire.
