#DVMISSION19 celebrating Portsmouth’s creative potential through filmmaking

DVMISSION is a film festival with a difference, in that all the films screened at the gala night have been produced over 48 hours during the preceding weekend. What happens is that at 5pm on a Friday night, participating teams are given a ‘film title, a film genre and line of dialogue’; what we call the ‘obstructions’. The teams then have just 48 hours to return on the following Sunday at 4pm, with a finished two-minute film. The following weekend all the teams arrive in their best suits & frocks for the exciting culmination to the weekend: the awarding of the coveted ‘Pompey Oscars’.

When the DVMISSION teams meet for the annual awards ceremony 300 plus of the brightest young creatives in the city are sat in that room networking with each other and celebrating Portsmouth as a city brimming with creative potential. There are instances of participants joining a team as teenagers and their on-going participation in DVMISSION tracks their career development from college, through to university and onto professional life as a filmmaker or videographer. Ben Sutton for example is typical of some our long-term participants. Having first taken part as a 14-year-old he has now graduated from Southampton Solent University and has recently been taken on as a trainee producer at the BBC. Ben will tell you that he learnt the craft of filmmaking doing DVMISSION and that this was his real film school experience.

More and more graduates are choosing to stay in the area after they finish their studies and DVMISSION is one of the ways that they maintain and grow their contacts as they move into professional work. There are many examples of new entrants in the industry making contact with working professionals and finding opportunities for freelance employment through the DVMISSION network. We also have examples of video production companies entering their junior staff in DVMISSION as they feel it is excellent training for them and really helps them develop skills in creative problem solving and team working.
