Realising the Potential of the Solent Region’s Gaming Industry

The Solent region has long been an under-recognized gem in the UK’s gaming industry, home to a dynamic mix of indie studios, academic institutions, and creative talent. Our new report, Mapping the Games Industry in the Solent Region, authored by Antivenin Games founder Annie Durwood dives deep into the state of the industry, uncovering key insights about game studios, workforce skills, and opportunities for growth.

The report highlights the presence of 70 game studios across the region, from established clusters like Guildford, known as the “Hollywood of Gaming,” to emerging hubs in Southampton and Hampshire. While the industry is thriving with small, independent studios, it also faces challenges, particularly in business and project management skills that could hinder long-term growth.

Education and training providers in the Solent are leading the way, offering 57 programs, including cutting-edge courses in esports. However, the report identifies a pressing need for multidisciplinary training, such as marketing and audio engineering, to support the growth of indie studios and diversify the industry.
