CULTURAL CITY

28th and 29th June 2018

You are invited to become a ‘cultural playmaker’ at this unique, two-day conference in the centre of Southampton. Get involved with this interactive event that will explore, debate and further the cause of culture in our city. Speakers from across the UK will join key decision-makers, city champions, businesses, cultural organisations and universities for a programme of workshops, talks, panel discussions and special evening events that will inform, entertain and challenge. Our aim is to galvanise support from within Southampton to recognise the value of embedding culture into the future ambitions of the city. We will explore and understand the potential impact that culture has on the economic and social wellbeing of our city and its communities. We hope you will join us.

Day 1, 28th June

Location: The Spark @ Solent University  Start time: Delegates arrival from 10.30am

Day includes workshops, panel discussions with local and national figures as well as high-profile national keynote speakers. More details to follow soon. Speakers include Rosie Millard OBE who is the Chair of BBC Children in Need, the BBC’s charity which helps transform outcomes for disadvantaged children across the UK. She was also Chair of Hull City of Culture 2017, a £32.5 million programme which opened in January 2017. Hull’s City of Culture Year in 2017 has been called “unmitigated, rip-roaring, awe-inspiring, life-enhancing success,” by Darren Henley, CEO of the Arts Council of England. Being a City of Culture has had a transformative effect on the Yorkshire city, achieving 90% engagement amongst its citizens, involving every single one of its 55,000 children and attracting millions of tourists. THE EVENING PROGRAMME 7 pm - 9 pm. All delegates are invited to stay for a special reception and talk at the John Hansard Gallery. More details to follow soon.

Day 2, 29th June

Location: The Spark @ Solent University  Start time: Delegates arrival from 10.00am

Day includes workshops and panel discussions with local figures as well as high-profile national keynote speakers. More details to follow soon. Speakers include Andrew Barnett. Andrew is the Director of the UK Branch of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Since it's establishment by Trustees in 1956, the UK Branch has made interventions in arts and culture, in social welfare and in education that have had a profound and long-lasting effect in Britain, and beyond. The UK Branch of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation aspires to bring about long-term improvements in wellbeing, particularly for the most vulnerable, by creating connections across boundaries such as borders, communities, disciplines, and sectors to deliver social, cultural and environmental value. The Foundation states that it wants “participatory performing arts to become a platform for the voices that are marginalised by society and to enrich the performing arts with diverse life experiences."

This two-day event is open to everyone and delegate places are priced at £15 per day of £25 for two days. Simply select the number of tickets you want and fill in your details now to secure your spot at ‘Shaping a City of Culture’.

STUDENT DELEGATES

We warmly invite students to pay a part at this event and help shape culture in the city. Student places have been subsidised by the partners and cost just £5 per day.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS

We are also offering artists working within Southampton special bursaries in return for their valued input into this event. Each artist we select will be awarded £150 and VIP delegate passes. In return, we ask that you simply attend all events and then create a blog or visual output from the event and well as playing your part in the discussion during the event. THE SPARK AT SOLENT UNIVERSITY

The Whitebeam and the Palmerston lecture theatre in the Solent Spark Building will play host to the majority of action during the conference on both days.

JOHN HANSARD GALLERY

The John Hansard Gallery is located in Southampton's stunning new arts complex in Guildhall Square, at the heart of the city's cultural quarter.

Cultural City is presented by Southampton Cultural Development Trust in partnership with Southampton Solent University, University of Southampton, John Hansard Gallery, Nuffield Southampton Threatres and Southampton City Council.
